How to Protect Your Check-In Luggage
When traveling by plane, I have always searched for a method to protect my checked-in suitcase. We all have seen those videos about people trying to see what’s in our bags or how they are transported from the airport to the plane – sometimes not in a very good condition.
So, I started to search for ways to always have everything under control, or at least from my side, so I can board my plane being assured that I did my part. Obviously, accidents can happen and the airport might still lose the luggage, but those cases are rare and solvable.
But that’s another story, that I hope we won’t need to tell.
In this article, I will tell you all about how I choose to take care of my luggage, what padlocks I use for it, along with what type of luggage cover exists. Enjoy the read!
Always lock your bag!
The first and most important step of the process of preparing your bag for check-in is to make sure you have a good lock! Some suitcases have a cipher lock included, so if that’s your case, you’re good to go. You just need to have a strong password for the lock and remember it. Otherwise, you may not be able to get to your clothes.
If your suitcase does not have a lock included, don’t worry! There are a lot of professional padlocks out there for you and I will guide you on how to choose one in the following section.
Choose your padlock
There are several types of padlocks, but the most popular are: the classical key padlock or the cipher padlock. First of all, you need to decide between these two. Both are very powerful, it just depends on your preferences. Make sure that whatever you choose it’s small enough to fit the suitcase lock slot. There are some universal padlocks, try to avoid them as they also have a universal key and anyone can open them.
- Cipher padlock – You will need to set a code and remember it or write it somewhere safe.
- Key padlock – If you like it the classy way, do not lose the key or you may need to cut your bag to get to your things.
Cannot decide between them? No worries, there is another option, more modern and fancier: the electronic padlock. What!? Yes, they exist. And there are options for them as well, you can either use your fingerprint to unlock it or use a phone application. This is the future, baby! Just make sure you don’t forget to charge it or have an emergency battery with you, in case the padlock battery is dead. And do not worry about rain, they are waterproof!

Cover your luggage!
When I first needed to check-in my luggage, I was thinking that I should cover it somehow. First thought: plastic foil. And it was amazing: it covered everything, I was able to recognize my bag when I had to pick it up from the belt at the arrivals, I was sure that no one was curious about what’s in it.
But! There are so many inconveniences about this, I cannot even talk about it. First of all, it’s plastic. And what does plastic do to the environment? You’re right, no good. Second, it’s pretty hard to reuse it after taking it off the bag. So, when I had to return home, I had to either buy another one, use a little and leave it there or go without a foil. I didn’t like any of the options, but sometimes, that’s what I had to do.
Recently, I have discovered the luggage covers and they are amazingly cute and useful. There is a variety of models to choose from, with all imaginable prints. You can even personalize them with your patterns if you don’t find what you like. They can be waterproof, dust proof, anti-scratch or all of them together. I believe this is one of the best inventions for people that want to make sure their luggage is safe during their trip.
There is another highlight to the suitcase covers: you will be able to recognize your bag first when looking for it at the arrivals belt and it will be definitely the coolest one out there. What do you think about them? Do you have one?
How do you protect your suitcase?
We talked about how people can be curious to see what’s in your bag or how the transport between the airport and the plane may not be the best for your belongings and you may want to protect them somehow.
The padlocks are the best, in case you want to make sure no one checks the interior of your luggage and we saw three types: the key, the cipher and the electronic padlock. But to protect your bag from dirt or scratches, a lock is not enough. You can either use a plastic foil or a luggage cover.
