Luggage with Charger? Welcome to the Future!

The chance that you read this article on a smartphone is very high. Do you also have a smart watch? I bet you do, or at least you heard about them. What about the smart cars? Or smart houses?

In the era of everything “smart”, let me tell you that luggage companies are not behind with their products. They work to develop new technologies every day. These days, you will see luggage with charger, with integrated weight scale, with keyless locks or with GPS tracking.

In this article I will tell you all about the smart luggage, what features it can have and how they can help you in your future travels.

What Is a Smart Bag?

The smart bag is basically just a normal bag, in which you pack everything you need for a trip, only that you will be able to do more with it. I will list and analyze each feature that a bag like this may have.

The Charger

There are bags that have integrated batteries, so when you are waiting for 2 hours in the airport, can’t find an outlet to charge your phone and you panic, you will always have your bag with you, to save you. The battery capacity will vary from one bag to another but it will be enough to keep your phone alive and you, out of the panic zone. We know that digital nomads need technology to survive and totally understand the need to stay connected.

Be aware that some airline companies will allow your bag with this feature on board only if the battery is removable, due to safety issues. Usually, you won’t need to check-in this kind of bag, as most of them are designed to be carry-ons. But, in case you do, the lithium-ion batteries are not safe in the cargo holds and they might start a fire.

The Weight Scale

Are you one of the people that over pack and anytime you put another shirt in your bag, you run to weight it? Another good feature of the smart luggage is that it scales itself. When you pack, you will be aware at any time how heavy your bag is. This way, you will always know when to stop putting more shirts.

The Location Awareness

If you are afraid that you might lose your bag and want to know where it is at any moment of the day, here comes the GPS tracker that the bag has. Some of them also have Bluetooth system which work the same way. You will be able to see your bag’s locations on a phone application.

The Lock

Most of the bags have an integrated padlock, which happens to also be smart, meaning that it doesn’t have a key and you can either open it with your fingerprint or with an application on your phone. You can find here more ways to protect your luggage!

The Ride

Now, what could that possibly mean? Ever heard of luggage that you can ride? Wait, what? Yes, there are several luggage brands that thought: “What if I don’t have to walk to my gate?”. And that is how the idea was born. You can find motorized luggage that you can ride, or scooter integrated luggage.

Do You Need One?

If you are happy about each and every feature described above, then yes! But be aware that some of them might be quite expensive. Having all that technology, they are worth the money, but there are always alternatives to what they can offer.

Instead of having luggage with charger, you can just have a portable charger, that you can use everywhere, not only when you have your bag with you. The alternative may even be cheaper.

Instead of the weight scale, there are small electronic scales designed specially for baggage.

If you want to know where your bag is, without having the smart one, there are a lot of small luggage trackers, that you can put inside your bag and use with an application of your phone.

If the padlock is not integrated, don’t worry, they don’t need to be, as you will find normal padlocks all over Amazon, unlockable in the same way: fingerprint or phone application.

But if you want to ride your bag all over the airport, you may not have an alternative for it.

The Smart Era

We have discussed here about the smart luggage and how it’s characteristics can help any digital nomad on the road. One of them, which is awesome, is the integrated charger. Then, your bag will scale by itself, make sure it’s locked and let you know where it is. In the end, you can even ride your bag to the gate.

But if you think that you don’t need all that, you can always find alternatives that are still smart and you can use for any luggage of yours.

What do you think? Do you have one? Will you get one? Let me know in the comment section!

Hey there! Thanks for sharing this awesome bag! I guess their making everything else smart so why not travel bags? I really like that this has a GPS tracker so that you can find your bag if it is lost. This will really help if the bag gets lost or stolen during travel. I know that I’ve misplaced my carry-on bag a couple of times at the airport when I first had my daughter. I wasn’t used to pushing a stroller and carrying a bag at once. Well my solution was to get a stroller with an under carriage but this works too!

Thank you for the informative post.  I travel with my drone a  lot so I know about traveling with batteries quite well.  I’ve looked at these in the past and have had several concerns:

Weight – varies depending on battery size

Space – again varies depending on battery size

Ability to bring aboard – as you said, many airlines will only allow them if the power sources are removable for safety reasons.

I definitely see the benefits but have a hard time weighing the pros and cons.  I did not know that many offered GPS or Bluetooth options for tracking and such.  That’s quite intriguing to me.

App integration/finger print locks is interesting but the auto follow and/or ride options are somewhat gimmicky and I assume takes up a lot more space and eat up the power you’d otherwise use for charging devices.

I’m still on the fence.  I guess the best way to determine if it’s a good fit for me is to actually go check them out in person and give them a try.

Thanks for the post.  It’s definitely food for thought.

Hello Scott, thank you for reading. Indeed, these bags have pros and cons, it just depends on how much you actually want one. Have a wonderful day 🙂

Isn’t technology amazing? What particularly interested me was the integrated weight scale. I hate it when I (or usually my wife) packs a suitcase and I then have to lift it up with one of those analog scales that you tie around the handle. I’m scared I will sprain my back and have to cancel the holiday!

Do you have any examples of who makes these, where I can get them and how much they cost?

Hi David, Glad the article was helpful. I will soon post some of those magnificent bags in the Accessories section. Stay tuned 🙂

Thanks for the informative post titled “Luggage with Charger? Welcome to the Future”! We’re truly in the era of everything “Smart” and several luggage companies, as I’ve personally experienced in some of my recent travels, actually develop new technologies such as luggage with integrated weight scale; key-less locks; and some with charger every day.

Though some of these technologies are expensive and can be worth the costs, it’s good for an average person to consider ordering some alternatives to what these features can offer. As you’ve explained in that post, a portable charger may be chosen instead of a luggage with charger, and some electronic scales designed specifically for baggage may be chosen instead of the weight scale.

Thanks for the great post!Israel Olatunji

This bag sounds incredible! I can’t tell you how many times my phone died and the charger was locked away deep within the bag (and me being lazy). I think that the weight scale is brilliant and would make packing a lot more efficient compared to the way I do it now (pack then unpack).

It is incredible to think that suitcases could have bio metric locks as a standard feature! I think as technology develops bag like these will be standard and made safer for flight purposes so that the bag is as safe as a non tech bag. This is quite exciting but also quite surreal to think that the humble suitcase could become so smart!

    • Stefania says:

Hello Renton, thank you for reading. I can totally relate with the charger! That’s why for me, this kind of bag is helpful. Happy travels!

I really love to have one, but not many info about this smart bag. I also did not make any effort to find it. Maybe not necessary to have it now. But all these smart stuffs are really helpful and required for certain people. I have seen before how a kid ride on this smart luggage on the airport and I thought I should have one. Walking long distance in the airport for kids really tiring, so this bag is a great solution for it.

    • Stefania says:

Hi, Azaliha, thanks for reading! Yes, some airports are just too big and this luggage would be helpful. Have a wonderful day!
