Trans-Siberian Train – A Vintage Experience

Everywhere you look today, you will notice some kind of innovation, you will see how technology advances more and more each day. Sometimes, this can be tiring and even though it’s fascinating, you may feel the need to take a break and go vintage.

If that’s your case, this is the perfect article for you. The Trans-Siberian Train is a great opportunity to travel not only through the whole Russia, but also in the past. In this text, I will tell you about the train itself, the route and how to prepare yourself for the long trip ahead.

The Train

The Trans-Siberian Railway is the most famous one in Russia, which basically connects Moscow to the other side of the country, having over nine thousand kilometers. It also has connections to China, Mongolia and North Korea. The construction of the railway started over one hundred years ago, in 1891  and it became functional in 1916. It is still being developed today.

The Russian trains are very vintage, you will feel like traveling back in time! Each carriage has its own attendant and they usually only speak Russian, but if you need anything, they will gladly help you. You can buy tea from them, which will be served in a specific train cup.

Depending on your destination, you can spend up to seven days inside of it, so basically you will start feeling like home. The rooms can have two, four or more beds, according to the ticket type. They are comfortable enough and the train movement will definitely make you fall asleep easily, being like a baby swing. Make sure you get to meet your neighbors, they will make the trip very entertaining with their stories.

The Food

train-restaurantThe train has a restaurant carriage, which has good food for a vintage train. Don’t imagine a five stars restaurant now. You can also expect the prices to be a little spicy for what they are actually offering. But the interior design is old as well and the view is magnificent.

In case you don’t feel like going to the restaurant, there is a very nice lady which will pass through all the carriages, advertising food. Usually she comes three times per day and you will be able to buy traditional Russian cuisine, for a cheaper price.

The best option regarding food, I may say, it’s buying whatever you want before the actual trip. You can have fish cans, vegetable cans, or whatever lasts longer without a fridge. If you want fresh food, the train stops on the way and you might be able to get out of it and find some shops. Make sure to be in time for the departure!

The Essentials

In this section, I will talk about what you’ll actually need in the train during your trip.

First of all, entertainment! And a lot of it. Buy books, take your tablet and watch movies – an external battery will be helpful as there is only one outlet for the whole carriage. Enjoy the view, interact with people, make friends, share experiences! The trip is long and staying between four walls may be boring sometimes, but as long as you have enough distractions, you will be fine. The most important thing is to enjoy the experience!

Let’s talk about how the conditions actually are in the train. And I mean, the bathrooms. It’s definitely not a hotel, so you will not have any shower, but you will have a sink and a toilet. Of course, the train attendants will make sure that it’s clean, but a little extra safety never hurt anyone. In this case, I recommend a lot of wet wipes.

In case you were thinking about bringing bed sheets, stop worrying. The train attendant will give you clean, new ones, so you can feel comfortable during your trip.

The Trip

Make sure you enjoy everything that the trip has to offer: the vintage atmosphere, the views, the food and the new friends that you’ll make. Don’t forget to bring the essentials in order to feel comfortable.

Have you ever traveled in the Trans-Siberian train? How did you like it? Let me know in the comment section!

This sounds like an awesome trip to take in order to disconnect and de-stress! Are the stops at different train stations long enough to go and adventure for a few hours? Also, how safe is it in the train?
I am sure that the scene is beautiful on this long train ride. I have not been on a train for over 20 years but I used to enjoy it immensely as a child!

Hi, Mike! Unfortunately, the stops are usually 20 to 40 minutes, so you won’t have time to go explore around. The train is very safe, from my experience. The rooms have locks, so you don’t need to worry. But even without the lock, they are still ok. The trip is definitely worth it, so if you ever have the chance, you should do it. Have a pretty day 🙂

That sounds fun and I will add it to my list of things to see and do!

So this train has sleeper cars…are they private? Or is it like a big dorm room?

And what would be the traditional Russian cuisine, because I am guessing it will not be hot food?? Just wondering if it is a good idea to bring some food and get the rest on the train.

Hello Irma, I am glad that the article inspired you! The train has sleeper cars with 2 or 4 beds, or cars like a dorm room, according to the ticket class. There is first, second and third class. The have soups, salads, porridge, meals based on fish or meat, and they can be cold or warm. It’s a good idea to buy food before the train (that’s what I did) in order to be sure that you have what you like and that you don’t overspend in the train.
