I bet you know what I am talking about. That’s the reason you ended up reading this article, right now. You just came back from an amazing trip and you feel like you don’t belong home anymore. I know the feeling. I have been there.
When you return home, after you just had a great adventure, learning new things, experiencing new cultures or trying some new activities at your destination, you may feel like you just wanted the trip to go on forever. That’s the worst feeling when you have the wanderlust in you, but you don’t have the time to do it that often.
In this article, I will speak about what is post travel depression or PTD, which is the feeling descried above, I will tell you what symptoms you may have and how to get over it.
PTD, What Exactly Is It?
So, first of all, we have all experienced this. You just feel sad, wanting to talk about your last trip like non-stop and with absolutely everyone! It is very real. Let’s see how it appears, when and why:
- When you are peacefully in your house, after returning from the airport and you realize that you are sleeping in your bed tonight, not in your hotel or hostel.
- You will suddenly feel that something is missing from you. The place. The people. The culture. The experience. You may already be familiar with everything that your base city may offer, so when you realize that there is nothing new there to discover, that’s how it starts.
- One of the logical reasons why it appears may be that you connected with the new place on a deeper level and you grew as a person. When you go somewhere new, it is inevitably that you develop yourself, your spirit, your personality.
- Another reason may be the jet lag. If, by any chance, you went somewhere which has even one hour difference, in comparison to your base city, you body will need to adjust. But not immediately, it needs time, that’s why you may feel this way.
What Can You Do To Heal?
There are several activities that will get you right back on track, so you don’t have to miss traveling, but to make you enjoy the moment you are living. I know that they don’t actually compare to the sensation of traveling, but they’ll trick your mind, so your body can adjust to the new (old) environment. 1. Have a sleepover when you come back
It is very good to have people around you. Call your best friends at your place and tell them everything! Give them the souvenirs you got and share the new memories that you created. 3. Edit your travel pictures and post them on your favorite social media
Even if it may create the “missing” feeling, you will actually feel better because you will relive the trip. A picture says a thousand words, so if you focus on making your photographs magical, you will remain with the best memories.
4. Decorate your room with maps and souvenirs
In case you didn’t do it already! If you don’t have maps in your room, start decorating! Also add your latest souvenirs from your trips. It is very beautiful to surround yourself with memories from all over the world.
5. Start to think about your next trip and plan it
